Guadalupe Mountains National Park, Sep 3-8, 2007

Guadalupe Mountains National Park is located in Texas on the border with New Mexico. Access to the southern part of the park - Pine Springs - is through Texas. To get to the northern part - Dog Canyon - you have to travel through New Mexico. Dog Canyon is South of Whites City and Carlsbad, New Mexico. The park is not crowded and the staff are very friendly.

The small camping area has less than a dozen campsites with tent pads and picnic tables. There is a restroom with flush toilets and a sink to wash dishes, but there are no showers. The only running water is at the restroom building or at the ranger station. There are also mule and horse pens and visitors can trailer in their own horses to ride the trails.

Guadalupe Mountains from a distance. It's a long drive from White's City, NM, to Dog Canyon Campground.
Nice mule deer greets visitors at the entrance. Beautiful sunset means setting up camp quickly.
Great location, near restrooms. And, very close to the parking lot.
Beautiful sunrise to start the day. Hummingbirds entertain visitors at the ranger station.
These Broadtail hummingbirds were nesting in the nearby oak tree. For larger images, click here.
Hiking the Indian Meadow Trail,
near the ranger station.

Texas Madrones. Red bark peels to expose smooth trunk. Berries are just some of the lush desert vegetation.

A well-deserved rest at the top of the Tejas Trail, near the McKittrick trail head.
